Hello, I’m Veronica

  • Help Alex McConduit HELP 2nd Graders W.R.I.T.E. & Publish Their Own Books

Hello Folks! Today officially starts the online fundraising campaign for my Youth Publishing Program; W.R.I.T.E. This program will turn all of the 2nd Graders at Sci Tech into published authors. Each student will write their own book and sell them on Amazon.com. We kicked off the program last week and we’ve already gotten some really cool stories. I’ll be posting more info about their progress soon but for now check out the video and our campaign homepage to help us make this happen.

  • W.R.I.T.E. – Week 1

After my first week with the 2nd Graders at Sci Tech I think we’ve both learned a lot. The kids learned what a narrative is and the basic elements that narratives encompass. We discussed main characters, plots & settings. All of the students completed their first rough draft of their books and we’ve got some really interesting stories. We also had author Denise McConduit and author Happy Johnson visit our classrooms on Friday to read their books and to speak to students about being an author & the importance of writing.

This week, the students will learn about revision and how to make their stories better. Most of the hard work will happen this week so I personally plan to push the students to do their absolute best. From spending more time in the classroom, I’ve learned that all of these kids have TREMENDOUS potential and for the next two weeks I’m going to do everything I can to squeeze every last drop of it out of them. They may hate me but at least they’ll be authors! Plus, I have candy so they won’t be mad for long!

    Until next time….

  • W.R.I.T.E. = Write Read & Illustrate to Educate

Long time, no see. I’m really sorry I haven’t posted in a while but I’ve been BUSY. This past summer I spent most of my days organizing a writing program called W.R.I.T.E. that I successfully launched last week at Sci Tech Academy. W.R.I.T.E. (which is an acronym for Write, Read & Illustrate to Educate) is a Youth Publishing Program designed to take students from all over the New Orleans metro area and transform them into published authors. For three weeks in September, I’ll guide the budding authors through the brainstorming, creative writing, revising, editing, illustrating and publishing processes. The students will also meet well-known writers and artists from New Orleans, who visit the classroom to offer advice and support. I created this program because after I published my first book I felt that I could accomplish anything. I want to give that same feeling to students in New Orleans and I hope that it can be something that will catapult them into a life of success… At the end of the program we’re going to have a Big Boot Book Release Party and you’re all invited.

Stay tuned for more updates as we move deeper into the program.
