Hello, I’m Veronica

The sky is not completely dark at night. Were the sky absolutely dark, one would not be able to see the silhouette of an object against the sky.

  • THANK YOU for helping our students Write, Read & Illustrate to Educate

Thank you all for donating to my  IndieGoGo.com campaign! We raised over $1000 through our online fundraiser and others who just wanted to help out! That will take care of most of our printing costs so it is a huge help.  I really appreciate it. This will have a LASTING impact on these kids life.. Ask any of your friends if they’ve ever written a book, I bet they’ll remember it forever…

For a month, I watched as the children laughed, cried and played during their writing process. All of them want to be authors now! That’s important and really hits home for me. As a child, I didn’t know any derma-pigmentation technicians or aeronautic engineers and so I never wanted to be one. NOW, it’s not that I didn’t think that I COULD be those things, it just never felt REAL… Hopefully, this made it real for them! THANK YOU!

Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!

  • W.R.I.T.E. Week 3: 2nd Graders Illustrate their Books

Last week our 2nd graders began to illustrate their books. They came out great! It’s funny because before I began the program I considered having professional illustrators complete the drawings in each book. After seeing the artwork their minds had in store for their books, I’m literally blown away. Take a look at a few of them below!

We’re still raising money to have the students’ books printed. We have 7 days left. Donate here!

  • W.R.I.T.E. Week 2 Recap

Today we finished up Week 2 at W.R.I.T.E. and our last day was one of the best. Artist, Filmmaker & Philanthropist Brandan Odums visited W.R.I.T.E. to speak to our students about what being an artist is all about. He also showed two videos & gave each student a book, bookmark and folder and then…….. Mr. Mac came through with the ice cream cups for all of the “good listeners” in the audience. It was a very good day and I really think that if there’s one day that will stand out in the students’ minds it will be this one. When Brandan showed his video for “Every Book in the World”, a remix to Lil Wayne’s “Every Girl in the World”, all of the students sang along. I’m only now realizing the power of that moment as it had them all singing “I just want to read every book in the world, I just want to read every book in the world” whether they realized what they were saying or not.

Anyway! This week the students revised their stories by “Writing in Small Moments”, making sure their stories made sense and by replacing boring words with exciting words. Next week we’ll be illustrating and editing our books. From there it’s off to the printers.

We’re still collecting donations to help make all of this happen. Check out our online fundraising campaign here!

  • Happy Birthday Karen McConduit (Ms. Mac)

Today only 29 years ago (Yeah right!) an angel was born and her name is Karen McConduit. You might think that I’m joking but I truly believe that my mother is an angel and I’m sure all that cross her path think the same. For 30+ years my mother has been a teacher in Jefferson Parish and she has worked with children in special education the entire time. She has always put others before herself and I’ve not one time seen her have a selfish moment. Her home has always welcomed anyone who has needed a place to stay for whatever reason and she continually goes out of her way to make others happy.

I’ve learned more from this woman than I have learned in every book I’ve ever read combined. Her biggest gift to me was the gift of compassion and its funny that as I write this, I’m sitting in a school about to teach my class for the first time ever. I never wanted to be a teach but both my mother, grandmother and now my sister have been involved in teaching and education in some way. The things that she has done for my sister and I can’t be put into words. I’m sure putting up with my foolishness was enough but she still somehow managed to put food on the table and be at every single one of my sister and I’s “events”. She’s always been there to help us out and to this day still does the same thing. Even in the picture above, she’s sitting at her grand daughter’s graduation… Never misses a beat!

If there is anyone I’d like to be like in this world, it would be her. I try everyday to incorporate more compassion and love into my life the way she always has for me. I don’t know what else to say. This woman is the best person I’ve ever met and I’m the luckiest person in the world because she is also my mother….

The End! Happy Birthday mom… She’s not on the internet at all so she probably wont see this.. We’re having a surprise party tonight for her and its gonna be fun.. If you know where, you’re invited, just don’t tell her!
