Hello, I’m Veronica

The sky is not completely dark at night. Were the sky absolutely dark, one would not be able to see the silhouette of an object against the sky.

  • Future Focus with Karl Washington

alex and karl washingtonLast night, I filled in for my friend Delfeayo Marsalis on Future Focus and I had the pleasure of interviewing international event producer Karl Washington. We talked about his life, his endeavors and his new event The NOLA Global Youth Festival. After doing some research on Karl I found a lot in him that I have inside of myself. Karl is a HUGE advocate for the youth and works with kids on a nonstop basis. He’s a coach for kids in the 9th ward and his NOLA Global Youth Festival will not only feature young performers from around the world but will also be exclusively be produced by young people from our city. That means the planning, the managing, the directing, the logistics and everything else will all be done by 40 young people that will take part in training during the weeks leading up to the fest.

I was very happy to learn more about Karl and if I can have the impact on children’s lives like he has and will, I’ll feel pretty okay about myself when it’s all said and done! To learn how to donate or be apart of the NOLA Global Youth Festival please email Karl at KarlWash@gmail.com.

  • Reading at Coghill Elementary

Reading at Coghill A few days ago I had the opportunity to read at Coghill Elementary located in Pontchartrain Park. I read to the third grade and kindergarten classes. I had a great time reading and I think I really connected with the kids during our discussion after I finished. We talked about the book, what it’s like being an author, whether I was rich or not and how I got to meet Barack Obama, Michael Jordan, Drew Brees, Justin Bieber, Serena Williams, Neil Armstrong and their favorite (as sad as it is) Nicki Minaj. I told them, “I got to meet them because I write books and I love to read.” It was a good time.

  • Snowballs for All at Hype Academy

Alex at Hype AcademyToday I had the pleasure of reading to the great students at Hype Academy. This is my second year visiting Hype Academy and it’s dually special to me because my friends Arianne & Joshua Jolla created Hype Academy at the same time that I started my publishing company and wrote my first book, “The Little Who Dat, Who Didn’t”. So for me, it’s somewhat of an honor to speak to their students.

While there, I had a great time with the kids. I usually speak and read to young children but today I was fortunate enough to talk to kids between the ages of 12 and 17. I tried to stress the importance of reading, following your ideas, living a purpose driven life and staying away from the bad things like drugs and crime. I told them that they can do anything that they want to do and provided examples that hopefully stuck with them. I can tell that these students are receiving a top tier education due to the questions and answers I received from them the entire time. They all have great ideas and some of them have even begin to follow through with those ideas which made me feel good. Hopefully, some of the things I said stuck with them. It was great and anytime they ask me to visit I’ll be there.

You can learn more about Hype Academy by visiting their website here.

  • Book Signing at Bay Books in Bay St. Louis Saturday 12/22

    book covers

This Saturday from 1pm – 3pm I’ll be signing books at Bay Books in Bay St. Louis. This will be my first book signing in Bay St. Louis but I spent about half of my childhood there. For as long as I can remember we’ve been going to Mary Lou’s house to cook, eat and play. Although a lot has changed over the years and I’m all grown up, I still feel like a little boy whenever I get there. Mary Lou is always cooking for us and preparing something on the side for a fundraiser or to support a local charity. Everybody loves her candy and I always get a side batch of fudge for the ride home.

I’m very much so looking forward to exploring more of Bay St. Louis before and after my book signing so if you see me out and about give me a shout!
